RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING:

“The ongoing responsibility and obligation of every gambling stakeholder to provide all the information and tools necessary for the gambling public to assess and control their individual gambling habits.”

I AM A FORMER SLOT MACHINE TECHNICIAN

I am a highly trained and certified Gaming Machine Repairperson with over nineteen years of experience at two major North American casinos and two major racetrack-slot facilities in the installation, setup, maintenance, and repair of a variety of slot, video, and video poker/blackjack machines, and their peripheral equipment. I have trained and supervised slot technicians, liaised with a variety of casino heads on different issues, and was the lead technical investigator of slot machine accounting variances. My years of research into slot machine addiction and interaction with problem gamblers has enabled me to develop my MMUL theory on slot machine addiction.

I AM THE AUTHOR OF A BOOK ON SLOT MACHINES

I am the author of the book, "SLOT MACHINES: FUN MACHINES OR TAX MACHINES? A Technician Reveals the Truth About One-Armed Bandits" published by Productive Publications (http://www.productivepublications.com/slot_machines.htm) (http://www.productivepublications.ca/slot_machines.htm) under the pen name Ian B. Williams. Published in 2000, this book is still selling because the information discussed in it has helped many addicts reduce and control their addiction.

MYTHS, MISCONCEPTIONS, AND URBAN LEGENDS (MMUL)

Along with factors such as psychological, genetic, environmental, biological, or obsessive-compulsive disorders, I believe that the major factors contributing to slot machine addiction are all the false beliefs that are constantly talked about and regurgitated about these machines. Many myths, misconceptions, and urban legends abound about how slot machines are programmed and how they operate, and how the operators choose when, where, and who gets to win jackpots. These false beliefs lead people on to believe that they can truly beat the machines. Misunderstood and skewed facts about payback percentage, tight and loose machines, hot and cold cycles, odds, and probability, and casino operations simply feed an addict's drive to hit the jackpot, to break the bank, to beat the machine, to triumph over the gambling industry.

SLOT MACHINE ADDICTION HAS NO SPECIFIC TARGET

Slot machine addiction does not happen to specific people. Slot machine addicts run the gamut from the poorest of the poor to the richest of the rich of every type of job and profession there is. No one is immune from this disease, including logically thinking people like doctors, police officers, and business executives.

SLOT MACHINE ADDICTION COSTS MORE THAN MONEY

Slot machine addiction can ruin careers, destroy families, and take lives. Some addicts end up stealing from work, family members, stores, and strangers to feed their habit. A few end up committing murder to get the money to gamble. Many commit suicide, or even take family members with them, due to shame and a feeling of hopelessness as the debts and bills pile up, and the savings and mortgage are spent in the machines. The slot machine addict is not the only one who suffers. Everyone around them suffers as well.

SOME SIGNS OF SLOT MACHINE ADDICTION

HELPING WITH EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE

By providing education and knowledge through my book, website, and consulting services, I have had many readers and visitors state that the information I've provided has helped them get some of their gambling problems under control. Through further counselling, most were able to either reduce their slot machine addiction substantially, or kick it altogether. My proven method of education and understanding of how slot machines actually work, combined with proper counselling, can help reduce or even prevent slot machine problem gambling. Dispelling all the falsehoods that abound about slot and video slot machines, video poker/blackjack machines, and video lottery terminals is good for players, gambling venues, and both the pro and anti gambling camps.

HOW I CAN HELP

SLOT MACHINE ADDICTION CONSULTING

With almost twenty years experience in the gambling industry and the publication of my book, "Slot Machines: Fun Machines or Tax Machines?" I have found that the driving forces of slot machine addiction are the beliefs in the myths, misconceptions, and urban legends that keep coming up time and again. I provide service to gambling stakeholders and the gambling public to educate on the real operation of slot machines and the dispelling of all the myths. I have trained and supervised slot technicians, liaised with a variety of Casino heads on different issues, and was the lead technical investigator of slot machine accounting variances. My years of research into slot machine addiction and daily interaction with problem gamblers has enabled me to develop my theory on slot machine addiction. Feedback from my first book “Slot Machines: Fun Machines or Tax Machines?” has proven my theory that once slot players understand how slot machines are designed, set up, and operate, they are less likely to develop slot machine problem gambling habits, and combined with traditional problem gambling treatment, are able to control or eliminate current slot machine problem gambling habits.

My career has put me in a unique position of direct contact with those players at the exact moment of crisis with their addiction enabling me to see and hear what those triggers actually are. Addiction counselors only see the aftermath of such events. I am an immediate eyewitness.

As a consultant to both the gambling industry and the private sector, I help to design effective educational programs and materials to dispel the myths, misconceptions, and urban legends that abound about slot machines. These programs inform and educate gambling regulators and providers, problem gambling counselors, and the gambling public in the true nature of the design and operation of Slot Machines.  Groups, agencies, and others can book me to give a talk about Slot Machine Addiction and Responsible Gambling to their members.

RESPONSIBLE GAMBLING CONSULTING

My Responsible Gambling consulting portion is designed to help all gambling stakeholders do what is necessary to ensure that gambling patrons have all the information they need to effectively decide, control, and regulate their own gambling activities. As a former member of a gambling operator's Responsible Gambling Committee, I understand the challenges that Responsible Gambling can present. However, these challenges can be overcome with an open mind and a desire to do what is best for the gambling public. I am a proponent and advocate for both my  “Responsible Gambling Full Disclosure" program which proposes displaying the odds of hitting the top award and the percentage payback of each slot machine theme prominently on every single slot machine, and my “Responsible Gambling Communications Protocol” which proposes the elimination of the usage of all negative gambling words in the industry such as lost, loss, losses, lose, losing, etc. on ALL regulatory and operator communications media to the public.
